Founded in 1973, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle is the first school in Atlanta named after the civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At King Middle School, students embark on a transformative educational journey, guided by a dedicated faculty committed to fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
In 2019, King Middle School became an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.
The school's curriculum not only emphasis academic achievement but also encourages critical thinking, empathy, and social responsibility, providing a solid foundation for students to become college-, career-, and life-ready, aligning with the IB organization’s mission. Both King and IB organization see learning as more than test scores—it’s about developing balanced, reflective students.

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
